Should I Grow Food in Raised Garden Beds?

So you’ve decided to start a garden?  That’s wonderful.  Perhaps you are looking to eventually build up to the point that you grow everything that you eat.  Maybe you are just on a quest for the ripest tomatoes to make truly excellent tomato sauce.  This could just be your first step into the wonderful world of homesteading.  Whatever your garden motivations are you will at some point consider if you should be growing in raised garden beds.  Well, let’s go through what they are and some reasons for and against them.

To Till or Not to Till: That is the Question

When you think of having a garden it’s fairly well established. In the spring you turn the soil over because it got all compacted down over the winter. Then you plant your seeds. They will grow up over the season and in the fall you harvest the last bits from your garden. Next you pull out the rest of those plants and toss them on the compost pile. The plot then gets ignored until the spring. I mean, that’s how the big guys seem to do it, and they know what they are doing, right?
